Shapes on the Page

 As artists,
We take our medium
And give it meaning.

The world outside,
Ideas in our heads,
All of these are taken and turned
Into shapes on the page.

Shrunken down,
Simplified,
Turned into something smaller,
Lesser,
Than the truth.

We know the truth is messy.
We have to live in it every day.
But no human,
No matter how smart,
Can ever understand the world
We were born into.

So all of us are destined
From the moment of birth
To take life,
Our medium,
And give it meaning.

To take our world, 
Large and complex,
And simplify it
Into shapes on the page.
